Alyssa Dowler is headed to Germany in August as a Fulbright Fellow teaching English.

The 2015 Suffolk graduate believes that her selection for the highly competitive Fulbright Fellowship had a lot to do with her involvement in the campus and community as an undergraduate.

Dowler, who majored in art history, with a minor in German, worked as a teaching assistant in a course for freshmen, tutored first-graders at an elementary school in Chinatown, and mentored youngsters with intellectual disabilities through the University’s chapter of the Best Buddies program.

Dowler’s 10-month Fulbright position will take her to Kiel, Germany, the state capital of Schleswig-Holstein, where she will teach English at a vocational training center for teens and young adults.

She credits the guidance of her professors for much of her success.

“They provided me with a good support system and really challenged me to push myself to do well,” said the first-generation college student. “Suffolk gave me many opportunities and allowed me to become independent and to grow as a person. And I’ve proven to myself that I could go into a college setting and succeed, securing an education that will continue to help me in my future.”

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program offers fellowships for U.S. graduating college seniors, graduate students, young professionals, and artists to study, conduct research, and/or teach English abroad. The program facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, and home.

“I hope to accomplish quite a bit using my language and communication skills,” said Dowler. “I want to become involved in this entire experience and explore if teaching is something that I really want to do as a career.”
