Shared Undergraduate Core

The Shared General Education Learning Goals are a set of learning statements that all undergraduates are expected to achieve as a result of graduating from Suffolk University. These shared goals were approved by the CAS and SBS faculty assemblies in spring of 2013 and are outlined below.

Shared General Education Learning Goals

  • Versatile Communication and Professional Development

    Upon graduation from Suffolk, successful students will be able to communicate effectively in diverse contexts, put their education into practice, and engage in lifelong learning.

    More specifically, successful graduates will be able to:

    • Read and listen with literal and critical comprehension.
    • Identify and respond to multiple rhetorical situations in writing and speech.
    • Create written and oral compositions in an open and ongoing process.
    • Comply with writing and speaking conventions appropriate to different rhetorical situations.
    • Display essential interpersonal skills needed for effective teamwork (planning, listening, negotiating, collaborating, etc.).
    • Engage in early career planning and professional preparation.
    • Understand and abide by ethical codes and professional standards.
  • Social, Cultural, and Global Perspectives

    Upon graduation from Suffolk, successful students will demonstrate an awareness of diverse perspectives and people, an understanding of why things are the way they are in terms of contexts and history, and an ability to adapt to and work in circumstances involving individual differences.

    More specifically, successful graduates will be able to:

    • Recognize different perspectives, standpoints, and diverse communities.
    • Understand a range of perspectives and cultural ideas in both historical and contemporary contexts.
    • Analyze how conflicting or convergent perspectives of diverse communities influence situations, decisions, and policies.
    • Develop solutions to problems that occur within a context of diverse perspectives or multiple communities.
    • Perceive and express the value gained from interactions with individuals holding opposing viewpoints or alternate perspectives.
  • Creativity and Dynamic Innovation

    Upon graduation from Suffolk, successful students will recognize and foster creative vision, meet and respond to ambiguity and risk in a variety of contexts, and cultivate the knowledge and skills necessary to engage in innovation and collaboration across disciplines.

    More specifically, successful graduates will be able to:

    • Identify challenges as opportunities in order to develop ideas and creative outcomes.
    • Respond to and critique novel approaches to understand a range of problems.
    • Implement appropriate techniques of creative expression or problem-solving.
    • Accept and offer constructive criticism to enhance outcomes.
    • Reflect on and adapt to failure and success in design, construction, or experimentation.
    • Draw from diverse fields to address a problem and construct feasible solutions.
  • Critical Thinking and Logical Analysis

    Upon graduation from Suffolk, successful students will demonstrate information literacy, an ability to use analytical reasoning in problem-solving and decision-making situations, a sophisticated understanding of theories, processes, and systems, and an ability to reflect and think critically.

    More specifically, successful graduates will be able to:

    • Comprehend descriptive and quantitative information across multiple modalities.
    • Evaluate the quality of information and assess its sufficiency for decision-making.
    • Employ the scientific method, formal and informal logic, mathematics, and other systems of analysis.
    • Accurately interpret data and draw meaningful conclusions.
    • Identify areas for systems change necessary to meet desirable outcomes; generate and evaluate different options for that change.
    • Analyze and evaluate one’s own behavior and thought processes within multiple contexts in an objective manner.
    • Critique particular systems of thought and behavior within multiple contexts.
