The Shared Curriculum Assessment Committee (SCAC) is a joint committee comprised of faculty members and administrators and includes members from the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), the Sawyer Business School (SBS), and the University central administration. The role of SCAC is to continually assess and improve the shared core curriculum and to monitor its coherence with, and adherence to, New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) standards.

SCAC has developed 4 rubrics for the purposes of assessing the shared core curriculum: Critical Thinking Rubric, Information Literacy Rubric, Oral Communication Rubric, and Writing Rubric.
Faculty are welcome to adapt the rubrics for use within their classrooms.
Critical Thinking Rubric - contains criteria for measuring students’ ability to demonstrate information literacy, use analytical reasoning in problem-solving and decision-making situations, understand and employ theories, processes, and systems, and think and reflect critically. The rubric below was developed and piloted during the summer of 2016.

Information Literacy Rubric - contains criteria for measuring students’ ability to know when there is a need for information; to be able to identify, locate, evaluate, use and communicate the information effectively and responsibly. The rubric below is the first draft developed by SCAC and will be piloted during the 2017-2018 academic year.
Oral Communication Rubric - contains criteria for measuring students’ ability to communicate orally. The rubric below is the first draft developed by SCAC and is currently being piloted during the spring 2017 term.
Writing Rubric - contains criteria for measuring students’ writing ability. The rubric below was developed and piloted during the summer of 2016.
